I have been doing a lot of thinking lately. Mainly about the newcomers arriving in New Bark Town.

After the massive snowstorm that came in before the holidays, I think we can all agree there has to be a better contingency plan to get new arrivals the proper help they need to get by. Maybe there is a way we can get information out to them better. I'm open to suggestion but here is what I'm proposing:

A basic survival guide. We already have a guide outlining the wildlife here but nothing about basic wilderness survival. Under these conditions, having a sleeping bag is not enough to get by through the night.

To be honest, besides learning it from others, I do not know the first thing about surviving the outdoors. But I know there are others out there who do. If we all pool our resources together we can make something that will save any newcomer a whole lot of grief.

Now I'm willing to compile the information together. All I need is a little help with the legwork here so to speak. Here are a few items to give everyone an idea:

1.) Weathering your campsite
2.) Building a fire from scratch
3.) Geo-navigation
4.) Notable Wild Pokémon Dangers
5.) Storm/Severe Weather Preparation

Now I may have unintentionally left some subjects out. But if this is something you're interested in then send me a message.

Who knew baby fire chickens like to play peck the shit out of Jayden's face as soon as it hatches? So far the winning nickname for this little guy is SHOO! Photobucket]

Now there's a sensible idea. As an addendum to your notable wild Pokemon dangers, you could also try to compile a list of the species you might encounter in your first few days — not just for the danger, but for people looking to shore up their roster with a second or third member early on.

I am trained in wilderness survival, and will help with anything I can.

[Granted, she doesn't have much experience with surviving in metric fucktons of snow, but...]

An excellent initiative. You might also want to include a section regarding food: dos and don'ts outside of the berry catalogue. That trail mix only lasts you so long.

It would probably be a good idea to make a note in your guide to tell them to read the Trainer's handbook they get in their bag. Not enough people read that when they arrive.

[Sure, it's not a catch all, answer all your questions, but it's still a useful read. If only for the berry list in the back.]

It's been a while since I last traveled that route, but I remember Pidgey and Hoppip around in particular. Spinarak like to inhabit the trees in that area, but you're only likely to see them at night. And wild Sentret are readily available, which makes at least four to start with.

You're the agent that's been talking to Albert Rosenfield, aren't you?

Shelter, for one. There's a rather egregious lack of it, as you've noticed. During the warmer months it's not as pressing an issue, but right now...well, it is safe to say that there is a problem there.

Igloos are perhaps too complicated when the goal is simply to reach the next town, but there are simpler snow shelters that can be built with less time and effort. Probably the simplest would be to find an overhanging tree with a hollow underneath created by the way the snow fell, but it is also the most exposed.

A trench can be dug with carved-out sleeping ledges and roofed over with a tarp or snow bricks, either laid flat or in the style of an A-frame. Generally speaking, that is the fastest method aside from finding a natural hollow. A quinze is another type of snow shelter made by piling snow in an even dome on top of equipment, then hollowing out the inner dome. In any of these cases, creating a sleeping ledge is important--it allows the cold air to sink away from you. And a breathing hole is also important, for obvious reasons.

[Coop sympathises. He got here in October and had a BIT more luck.]

It's far from a walk in the park, but it's doable. However, the most important pointer might be to discourage people from trying to eat or drink what they come across. It's usually more trouble than its worth if you're not 100 percent certain what you're doing.
That said, I'd be happy to contribute to the project. I'm far from an expert but do know the basic principles of survival.

[Guess who was a boy scout. This guy was a boy scout.]

Frankly, I'm surprised some enterprising trainer or breeder hasn't moved to New Bark and set up a transit service or Rent-a-Pokemon outlet for new arrivals. I certainly would've used it on my first day.

You could say that. I mailed a package for you on his behalf a few weeks ago.

It is certainly easier with shovels and snow saws, but unfortunately, we aren't so lucky as to be particularly well-equipped when we start out. Perhaps with certain Pokemon it could be done, but generally speaking the ones we start with are not those.

Digging a cave out of a snowdrift or making a quinze are probably the only real options.

Finally someone who gets it! Everyone I talked to thinks they're too cute and cuddly to be dangerous.

But they're not. They're pure evil in the form of a tiny, cute-looking Pokemon.
